The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed the new benefit payment rates for April 2026 to April 2027. Most benefits will increase by 3.8%, in line with the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) measure of inflation. However, there are important exceptions, particularly for some Universal Credit health elements.

Below is a full breakdown of what is changing.

Universal Credit - Health Elements

This is where the most significant changes apply.

Limited Capability for Work (LCW)

  • £158.76 ➜ £158.76 (no increase)

Limited Capability for Work and Work-Related Activity (LCWRA)

For new claims from 2026 (who do not meet the severe conditions criteria):

  • £423.27 ➜ £217.26

This is almost a 50% reduction for new claimants.

For:

  • Pre-2026 claimants

  • Claimants meeting the severe conditions criteria

  • Claimants who are terminally ill

Rate increases:

  • £423.27 ➜ £429.80

Important: Work Conversations for UC Health Element Claimants

The government has confirmed that people receiving the health element of Universal Credit will be expected to take part in periodic conversations about work and support.

These are not job-search requirements.

According to government guidance:

  • Claimants will not normally be required to look for work or take a job.

  • They will not usually be required to complete specific work-related activities.

  • However, they will need to attend support conversations where appropriate.

  • If someone does not attend or engage, the DWP will first seek to understand why.

  • Sanctions can potentially apply if there is no good reason.

There will be exceptions where participation would not be appropriate.

What This Means for Disabled People

Most welfare benefits are increasing in line with inflation.

PIP, DLA, Attendance Allowance and ESA support components rise by 3.8%.

Universal Credit standard allowance increases above inflation.

New LCWRA claimants from 2026 who do not meet severe conditions criteria will receive significantly less.

Some UC health element claimants may face work-focused conversations, with possible sanctions if they do not engage.

I recently read an article on Valhalla Vitality about phentermine and whether it can appear on routine screenings, and it was surprisingly informative. It explains the topic clearly without being overwhelming. I liked that it gives practical insights that anyone interested in their health can understand. It’s the kind of read that makes you more aware of everyday health considerations. Definitely worth checking out.
